Stone Pathways with Planted Joints

Carmel Point Landscapes designs and builds many different types of pathway systems for clients located in Monterey, Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach, Carmel, and Big Sur. When we design garden paths, we consider several factors: architecture, location, proximity to trees, code restrictions, and so on.

One of our favorite ways to design garden pathways is to use natural stone with a planted joint. We call planted joints "soft grout," and we use several different types. To name a few, Dymondia, Elfin Thyme, Blue Star Creeper, Irish and Scotch Moss, or Creeping Thyme have been reliable choices for the Monterey Peninsula and Big Sur.

When we design pathways with planted joints, many of our clients ask how the plants will survive. The key to keeping your crevice plants happy is to start with a good design.

At Carmel Point Landscapes, we are a full-service landscape design company that provides clients with landscape construction plans, planting plans, irrigation design, along with landscape lighting and visual renders. The right plant, designed into your project along with proper irrigation, ensures the success of your planted joints.

Typically, a 1/4" perforated soaker hose is designed between each stone to provide adequate water during the establishment period and summer drought. Before plantings are installed, we use high-quality organic compost mixed with the native soil. This helps to increase nutrition and improve drainage and aeration for your new plantings.

Another benefit of a stone pathway with planted joints is permeability. The space between each stone allows water to percolate into the soil instead of running off into the ocean. When water can't be absorbed into the ground, it picks up sediments along the way and ultimately ends up in our rivers and streams, causing pollution.

If you live in Monterey, Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach, Carmel, or Big Sur, check out some of the pathways we have designed and built, and call us if you're interested in doing the same.
