Video: Big Sur Design & Build

Writer's picture: CPLCPL

This landscape design/build project in Big Sur consisted of building several low-impact, dry-stack boulder walls—constructed without footers, steel, or mortar.

The first task was selecting the right boulders, which we carefully hand-picked from a local quarry. Once delivered to the site, we began the groundwork, digging and preparing the area.

We then measured, cut, chipped, and stacked each boulder. After completing the top wall, we shifted focus to the lower walls, where we terraced the slope and landing area. With the boulder walls were in place, we designed and built a cantilevered redwood bench.

Next, we turned our attention to the pathway, constructing it with 6x6 redwood treads that complemented the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape. Now that the hardscaping is complete, we moved on to planting, bringing the entire design to life!
